So tonight I was reading a book – that I’m loving – and it reminded me of some of God’s simple attributes that I most often overlook. The main one that stuck out to me today was “never changing”. See we change, all the time, we change day to day, month to month, year to year. Its the nature of life. We grow. We grow from children to young adults, from young adults to thinking we are adults, then we get responsibilities (children) and we realize we are just now become adults. I’m sure this continues but thats all I can speak of….sorry college students that think your an adult, just wait you’ll get it. But in the midst of our ever changing life HE remains the same. Not just for us but for all eternity. He doesn’t change His mind, EVER! He is decisive and He is always right. Wow! think on that, 50 years ago when Civil Right’s issues were changing…..He was the same, or 200+ years ago when we forming our country, He was the same. You get the drift. His language didn’t change, His word didn’t change, his clothes didn’t change, He didn’t grow-up, He was.

Now many, many years ago, when I was twenty-three,

This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red.

This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life,
My daughter was my mother, cause she was my father’s wife.
To complicate the matter, even though it brought me joy,
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy.

My little baby then became a brother-in-law to Dad,
And so became my uncle, though it made me very sad.
For if he was my uncle, then that also made him brother
Of the widow’s grown-up daughter, who, of course, was my stepmother.

Father’s wife then had a son who kept him on the run,
And he became my grandchild, for he was my daughter’s son.
My wife is now my mother’s mother, and it makes me blue,
Because, although she is my wife, she’s my grandmother, too.

Now if my wife is my grandmother, then I’m her grandchild,
And everytime I think of it, it nearly drives me wild,
For now I have become the strangest case you ever saw

it seems that as each day passes, my family and family time gets more important to me. jenn has been saying for a while that she could just move to a cabin in the middle of no where with very little material things as long as she had tour family there. at first i was like, ok jenn that wouldn’t be super fun, we would have nothing to do, but now that i’ve been gone for a couple days and i have been mentally gone and totally stressed out for the last couple weeks, i am looking for that cabin. 

i’m not sure who started this, if it was the jump from horses to cars or radio to tv but somewhere along the way we (people) decided life wasn’t fast enough, it wasn’t full enough, we didn’t have enough stuff and we grew up too fast, we forgot how to play, and everything became important. now the most important thing for me each day is time. its trying to balance all the stress of the day and all the lines on the list of things to do just so i can get thru the day and back to the people i love.

jenn, dawn and i are reading “wild at heart”. i have read it before and jenn had read some, but dawn has never read the book. also you should know when i say “reading” i mean, jenn reads and we listen. all that to say, i really love this book. it reminds me of being a kid. as a little kid i played outside non-stop. i was hyper, mischievous, and imaginative. i was daring, courageous, the hero, and i was dangerous. what made those days so great was there was no worry, i didn’t worry about work, money, safety, what we were going to do that night, who my kids were hanging out with, school, anything. i was happy to be alone, to play in the yard, to build stuff that didn’t quite work as I had planned, to run, to swim, to swing, to chase, to be a kid. 

there are many things in this book i love. one of the things is how it reminds me that we are not meant to live the life of a stereotypical business men, to live a life of worry and stress. we are wild. that doesn’t mean you have to hunt or fish or camp or even like outdoors. it means that in the heart of a man you are designed to live wild. i am in process of taking on a new risk that has the opportunity to overtake me with stress. i do love risk, they motivates me, they keep me honest, they inspire me, they teach me and for some reason i am not scared of them. 

this book reminds us that throughout the bible God is portrayed as a warrior, He is strong, He is wild, He is decisive, He is to be feared. it also reminds us that we are made in his image, that our core is the same, we are wild.

i think a lot of people take offense to this book because on the surface they feel it attacks who they are, thats no the case.  i love the outdoors and i feel “wild” when i am out there, but i can experience the same feeling when i am working on a project that i truly love or when i am playing with the kids, or wrestling or going to batting cages at lunch. we just have remind ourselves who we are from time to time, becasue the world wants us to forget.
